Norcross, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. The Norcross MARTA station is on the Blue Line of the Atlanta Metro System. Norcross was founded in 1881 by John Norcross and his brother-in-law George Washington Smith as an agricultural community on a tract of land that now includes much of downtown Norcross and parts of east Norcross and west Norcross. In 1902, John Norcross donated to the city of Atlanta a tract of land extending from what is now Beltline Boulevard to Peachtree Road, which became known as City Park. The original town site was developed into today's downtown area with buildings such as the old courthouse, post office and firehouse still standing today. In 1955, when it merged with other towns in Fulton County (including Centerville), Norcross became one of only two cities in Georgia to be granted full city status by then Governor Andrew Johnson. As one result, Norcross has continued to grow since its incorporation as a municipality; it now boasts over 100 businesses including banks and restaurants along with more than 60 housing units built since 1978 on several square miles located primarily around the civic center complex across from Midtown Center mall. In addition to its contribution to Fulton County's economy - through jobs in government services (such as law enforcement), manufacturing (steelmaking) and real estate -Norross also supports various arts events throughout the year both inside Municipal Hall where street performers set up shop every day during Art Walk or outdoors at nearby parks like Stone Mountain Park or Central Parkade amphitheater where live music can be enjoyed all summer long while families enjoy picnics next to Discovery Waterpark or Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park right next door! Norcross is a city in metro Atlanta, on the southern edge of the city of Atlanta. The population was 105,554 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth-largest city in metro Atlanta. It lies within Cobb County and is served by Norcross Municipal Airport. Norcross began as a farming town called "Newnan" located near present-day Decatur and Roswell. In 1836, General James A. Cook landed his ship " Pandora " on what is now Norcross Beach to trade goods with the Cherokee nation during their annual gathering at Mocoma Creek estuary. From this early trading post, Norcross grew into an important center for cotton traders and farmers in central Georgia during the antebellum period. In 1852, George Washington Carver established his own vegetable farm northwest of town on what is now known as Carver Road and made Norcross one of his primary business centers supplyingAtlanta with produce from his farmsteads in neighboring DeKalb County (now Gwinnett County). The growth of agriculture in central Georgia led to increased demand for water supplies that became available through land acquisition by railroads; this increase in transportation played a significant role inNorross' development as an agricultural center during the late 19th century. The first electric streetcar system ran between downtown Norcross and Marietta starting service on October 15, 1895; passenger services were discontinued after two years due to financial difficulties caused by high costs associated with new technology at that time. In 1903, construction began on what would become Southside High School – one of America's earliest high schools open to students from all social backgrounds – which opened its doors to students on September 25, 1904. This milestone gave Norross its first professional class when six young men graduated from Southside High School: future United States Senator Coleman Hawkins (1902-1964), Mayor Johnnie Cochran (1910-1963), State Representative Burton Kittleman (1896-1974), businessman J Clyde Whitehead (1888-1967) and dentist Horace Mann Woodward (1881-1965). During World War II much activity took place throughout Cobb County including production of munitions at Paulding Army Ammunition Plant north cf Gastonville adjacent to Chattahoochee Hills National Forest; however most residents avoided war zones because they could not afford military enlistments or food rationing. Many people did send money back home for family members who had enlisted outside the country but many others decided not to fight because there was no guarantee they would return home alive or even come back at all once hostilities ended; some estimates put the number dead soldiers drafted into service above 20000%.
Norcross was founded in 1885 by James Norcross and his brothers, who began the Norcross-based cotton ginnery. The company became a major player in the Georgia cotton industry, and its mills were known for their high quality fabrics andfor their innovative products. In 1927, the Norcross family sold the company to American Can Company. American Can continued to operate the mills until 1984, when they merged with Seagrams Corporation to form what is now Seagrams Brands Inc.
