The city is located on Interstate 85 south of Atlanta and north of Norcross. The Norcross area was first settled by European Americans in the late eighteenth century. They built mills and churches in what is now the downtown area of Norcross. In 1892, a group of local businessmen pooled their money to purchase all of east Fulton County from the Creek Nation. This land became known as Norcross Township. The township's first mayor was George Ladd Sr., who served from 1892 to 1896. In 1926, Georgians elected Jeptha Alexander as their first black mayor after he won election as a Democrat from an open seat in a district that had been controlled by Republicans since Reconstructiontime. In 1949, ownership of the township passed from norcross Township to newly formed Gwinnett County when it was created from portions of Fulton and DeKalb counties following statehood within Georgia. Incorporation followed within days and soon produced such luminaries as future governor Sonny Perdue (whose father also lived in Norcross) and attorney general Paul Hackett (who later became president). After years during which most businesses closed because there wasn't enough business friendly zoning code changes made or because consumers didn't want to move toNorcross due to its high crime rate, Lower Broad Street saw some rebirth with new businesses opening up including several clothing stores along with restaurants such as "Papa John's" Pizza & Pasta and "Dinerama". From 2006-2010 there were considerable protests against plans by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed to rezone much of downtown into luxury apartments/condos rather than allow more retail inside while preserving key cultural attractions like movie theaters etc., violence has become evident on lower Broad Street where regular citizens are defending their homes against vandalism/pest infestation; dealers have taken advantage this situation through increased prices for goods on store shelves

After the war ended, the city began to decline; its economy shifted towards farming and manufacturing during the twentieth century. In 1990,Norcross became part of the new district of Fulton County.
