Norcross, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1802 by Captain John Norcross as a landing on the Chattahoochee River for trading with Indians. From its beginnings as a small frontier settlement until it became an important center of cotton production during the 19th century, Norcross underwent many changes and advances. In 1792 when George Washington explored what is now Georgian Bay, he noted that "There are two places within these bounds where water can be procured to drink; one is at Norcross (now known as Roswell), on the south side of the river; another at Iuka (now Milledgeville), about three miles from this place." In 1802 Norcross erected a sawmill on his land which led to his later business endeavors including real estate development and farming. In 1856 he donated land for what would become Druid Hills Cemetery which continues to serve as a popular tourist destination today. After watching numerous acres near his home go unowned due to lack of interest from developers over time, Captain John Norcross donated all of his remaining land in 1870 for what would become Druid Hills Park which still remains one of Atlanta's most popular areas today. Norcross was once considered one of America's most prosperous small towns with businesses such as banks and other commercial enterprises dotting its downtown area. However, since World War II has seen consistent declines in both population and economic activity throughout much of Fulton County resulting in significant loss of jobs and commerce within town boundaries- particularly those surrounding Druid Hills Park Additionally recent gentrification trends have contributed significantly to declines in crime rates within town limits while concurrently increasing income opportunities available to residents outside town limits making it difficult for some longtime residents who may not have benefited from increased prosperity or new investment opportunities to maintain their homes or keep up with changing community norms
Norcross was founded on December 1, 1827 by three men: George Norcross, John Norris, and Michael McNeely. The town's first post office opened in 1828. It grew rapidly due to its natural resources and the fact that it was located on the Georgia Railroad. In 1865, Norcross became the county seat of Cobb County.
