Norcross was settled in 1827 by John Norris and others who arrived on the Gwinnett River from what is now Alabama. The first post office established in Norcross was called "Gwinnett" but it was renamed "Norcross" in 1881 after J.D. Norcross, one of its founders. In 1905, Norcross had a population of 811 and became the first city in Fulton County when it amalgamated with neighboring Peachtree City. In 1941, during World War II, Norcross played an important role as a storage and distribution center for munitions produced by nearby Milledgeville munitions plants. The war inspired several businesses to expand into the area and more than 60 new businesses were started or purchased within two years of the war ending; many remain today including Norcross K-9 Supply (now Kennelmax), which has been operating since 1951; GFS Bank (now HSBC) acquired much of Atlantica Marine Lines business before merging with BB&T corp.; US Airways moved its headquarters from Charlotte to Atlanta; Coca-Cola built its first bottling plant here; and Plaza merchants opened their doors to shoppers on Decatur Street between downtown streetscape renovations completed in 2002 created narrower pedestrian malls edged by high-rise buildings spreading out eastward towards Interstate 85 Parkway/Highway 15 interchange).
