In 1902, Newnan residents George W. Kelly and Fenton W. Brown started the first scopes in the city. The pair purchased a small telescope from an American dealer in 1903 and began to exhibit it at local civic events. In 1909, they founded the Georgia Short Muscular Dystrophy Society to promote research on the disease. In 1932, they donated their telescope to Newnan High School as part of the school's collection of artifacts and memorabilia related to education in Georgia. The school continued to use the telescope for astronomical observation until 1978 when it was taken down due to lack of funding.

Newnan is home to the University of Southwestern Georgia and Stetson University. Newnan is first settled in 1817 by English settlers as part of what would become known as the Land Grant System. In 1824, a post office called "Newnansville" was established in what is now Newnan. The name was changed to "Newnan" in 1881 when it became part of Fulton County. The first school in Newnan was built on East Main Street in 1827 by James Sowersbury and his family. In 1865, Drury Academy opened for grades 1-4 on North Main Street near present-day Middle School; it closed in 1959 but remains a historical landmark nearby. In 1888, Gordon Bledsoe purchased land from Aaron Burr for $10 per acre and began building what would become known as Bledsoe Manor; it still stands today (though its contents have been moved several times). The townspeople voted to incorporation into Fulton County on April 6, 1889; new businesses were started quickly including a grocery store, bakery, millinery shop, doctor's office and two hotels – one named after President Grover Cleveland (the other after General Ulysses S. Grant). The cotton industry declined during the 1920s and 1930s due to World War II efforts to expand defense production; however, since then Newnan has seen an increase in development with many new businesses opening up throughout the years such as Ford Motor Co.'s plant where they manufactured automobiles until it closed down in 2006 and Goodyear Tire & Rubber's plant which operated until 2009 before being replaced by Allstate Insurance Company's headquarters which remains today(though portions are used as apartments). Today there are many students living here who attend universities like USSWG or StetsonUniversity which makes this place even more vibrant!
