The town was founded by Captain James Cook in 1793 as part of a move up the Chattahoochee River to escape Indian attack. After being burned down by Seminole Indians in 1803, it was rebuilt by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and named for him. In 1831, the town became part of what would become Atlanta; Newnan did not join Atlanta until 1907. Newnan's rich history includes numerous African American leaders such as Booker T. Washington and Elijah Muhammad; local industries include cotton ginning and printing;and two large schools – one for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and one for high school students – have been operational since before 1920.
