The area that would become Newnan was first settled by people of African descent during the 18th century. A post office called Newnan was established in 1795, and named for Lieutenant Colonel James Cook who had explored much of what is now Georgia in 1793. By 1800, most of what would become Coffee County had been claimed by Georgia when it became a state. In 1802, traders discovered coffeebeans growing wild in this area, which led to their development as coffee plantations began to be developed hereabouts beginning in 1810-11. In 1870, a group of investors came together to purchase 640 acres (240 ha) around present day Old Fort Road and build a new town named Newton on it – one of many planned towns throughout Cobb County during this time period as part of efforts to learn how best to serve residents with good public transportation and access to education while economizing on land values. The town plat was filed December 1st, 1870 and opened for business February 2nd following an assemblage meeting at which Colored Citizens were given an opportunity to vote on proposed boundaries for Newton Township including parts of present day CobbCounty that today are part Of Oak Ridge Village & Dunwoody Park Elementary Schools - making Newton one of the earliest racially integrated communities in America! Newton quickly grew into one of Georgias leading cities due its location near railroad tracks/roads allowing easy access both eastbound & westbound traffic; its convenient location also made it an ideal place for working class citizens seeking employment opportunities outside the more expensive Atlanta areas; as well as small farmers who could not afford better options or simply did not have enough space or money for such acreage back then! In 1907-08 Atlanta experienced a horrendous fire that destroyed over 25% OF THE CITY IN TWO HOURS INCLUDING NEWTON! Newnan, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 18,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Newnan was founded in 1838 as a small community on the Indian River by James Witherspoon and his wife Jane. In 1859, it became a State capital under the name of Atlanta; however, Newnan retained its original name until 1959 when it became part of Fulton County. In 1870, John Newton founded Newton-on-the-Marsh cotton gin in what is now downtown Newnan. Robert Epps acquired this gin in 1901 and operated it until 1915 when it passed to Clarence Saunders who operated it until 1936 when it was purchased by George Crouch Jr.. During World War II American military personnel stationed at Father McCall Air Force Base used Newton's football field as an airfield for bombing practice. Afterward the airfield changed hands several times before finally being sold to new owners who named it Newnan Army Air Field (later renamed Albany International Airport). The first post office in Newnan opened on April 15, 1838. It closed on December 12 of that year due to lack of customers and reopened on January 3rd with mail from Decatur and other nearby villages which had joined forces to form the Gwinnett County Courthouse Annex Committee during Commissioners Court proceedings that day. The office continued operation until May 1st 1880 due to flooding caused by heavy rains that season which destroyed much of downtown Atlanta including both the courthouse annex committee building and all but one floor of the federal building across Constitution Avenue from where mail originated from before being delivered through streets filled with water rats had become established as favorite food Umphrey's Lager breweries were then located adjacent property line) according to available contemporaneous records: "At 4 P M A T June 10th [1870], Messrs Jno Newton & Son(s) erected here a large iron frameHouse having two stories fronting Broad Street between Park Row South & Union Square West...
