Newnan, Georgia (population: 9,000) is a town located in northcentral Georgia. The town was founded in 1853 by General James Wilkinson and was named for the new American settlement of Newnansville located about two miles east of the present-day town. The first store in Newnan was built on the corner of College Avenue and State Road 36. In 1865, Newnan became a post office with the name Newton. In 1875, the town gained city status and adopted its current name. The population of Newnan increased from 2,500 to 10,000 by 1900; however, it decreased to 6,500 by 1930. By 1970, the population had again increased to 11,500 but fell to 7,500 by 2000. However, due to an increase in tourism and other businesses since then (including several colleges), the population has now reached 12 thousand people. Newnan is known for its peach orchard which produces about one million pounds of peaches each year according to some estimates. Other notable crops grown here include corn and soybeans; apples are also a major crop hereabouts; grapes are also produced abundantly; roses are also popular local flowers; while olive oil production has been increasing as well over recent years due to growing demand from international markets. A variety of industries have sprung up around this small community over time including education (one college provides instruction here), health care (a clinic exists nearby), manufacturing (several companies have their headquarters here), transportation (local buses service this area), professional services (a few firms provide services such as law enforcement and accounting) as well as retail activities such as gift shops and restaurants serving Georgian cuisine typical of this region

Newnan is a small town in the southeast corner of Georgia, about 25 miles south of Atlanta. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Newnan County and part of the Fulton County metropolitan area. In 1847, John Brown and his group of "Lone Rangers" raided an arsenal at Murfreesboro, Tennessee and took six hundred rifles and two thousand rounds of ammunition with them. They rode back to Newnan and unloaded their loot on the local farmers before setting off for home. This event helped create a nickname for Newnan - "The Rifle Capital Of The South". Newnan's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding in the 1800s. Today, newnan grows corn, soybeans, cotton, sugar beets, potatoes and other vegetables. There are also a few manufacturing plants that operate primarily in textiles or plastics products. Some notable businesses in Newnan include Pritchett Furniture Company (maker of furniture since 1865), Southern Appalachian Agrable Supply (a retailer specializing in agricultural supplies) and American Glass Works (the first glass company in America). Newnan is also home to several museums including Liberty Hall Museum (established in 1913), which contains artifacts from both Georgia's early history as well as modern day events; Phillips Historical Society Museum (an interdisciplinary museum focused on history, art history and architecture; open daily 9am-5pm); heritagetown National Historic Site (); as well as several smaller museums throughout the community including Klein’s Art Gallery & Gardens (), Baptiste Children’s Home (), Presbyterian Church ()and Methodist Episcopal Church (). As one of only a handful of communities located within 10 miles of Atlanta proper by 1960 (!), soon after its incorporation into Fulton County in 1878, much attention turned to what would become known as "The City That Could". By 1930 there were more than 50 businesses operating here with a total payroll over $1 million dollars annually! In recent years there have been efforts to resurrect some aspects of downtown business district activity such as streetcars running through it during lunchtime/afternoon hours; hosting music concerts/ festivals during summer months; creating new parks ()in traditional downtown locations; connecting Old Main Avenue with nearby MARTA stations; renovating older buildingsin what used to be downtown Crossing Street location- all while reducing traffic congestion around this vibrant commercial district
Newnan, Georgia was founded in 1837 by Captain James Cook and his men on the edge of what is now Atlanta. It grew rapidly as a frontier town, becoming one of the most important economic and political centers in Georgia. Newnan became an incorporated city in 1907.
