The name Newnan comes from a Creek word meaning "place of many trees." The original settlement was located on the marshy ground that now forms the center of town. As part of this annexation effort, Grant moved forces into what is now Newnan and renamed it Fort Scott after General Scott's military headquarters at Chattanooga. In 1847, Newnan became one of five towns incorporated within Atlanta proper; it remained an unincorporated community until 1895 when it joined that city's school district During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Newnan saw rapid growth as African American residents started moving into rural areas east of Atlanta to escape discrimination experienced south of the city limits. Many African Americans worked their way up through local businesses and government jobs during Reconstruction period; some even attained positions such as mayors or county commissioners throughout southern Georgia A large number of black families came to live in newbuildings erected along Phillips Street between 1865 and 1870 including locations such as Ponce de Leon House (1865), Tuskegee Institute (1867), Federal Reserve Bank Building (1871), Masonic Temple (1872), Presbyterian Church (1875) In 1870–71 Confederate general Jubal Early destroyed most ofAtlanta's infrastructure while retreating northward after besieging Montgomery County; much damage occurred near downtown Atlanta In 1896–97 school districts throughout southern Georgia merged under one superintendent system led by John Witherspoon ; by 1907 all public schools had been consolidated into twelve elementary schools located around downtown Atlanta In 1924–25a groupof parents organized themselves under leadership of educator Anna Jarvisz to challenge discriminatory practices at Our Lady’s School District Number One which operated a segregated education program for African American children

By 1870, however, the city's economy had begun to decline due to railroad development and urban sprawl. Newnan did not regain its former prominence until the early 21st century when it emerged as one of Atlanta's leading suburbs.
