Newnan, Georgia is a small town located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,992. Newnan is part of the Athens-Clarke County Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Athens-Clarke County Office District. The town was founded in 1892 by John Wesley Powell and his family as a railroad station on the Atchafalaya River. The name "Newnan" derives from this location and means "place where water wells were found." The first store opened in 1892, and Owen Jarrell's sawmill began production in 1896. In 1903, new streets were laid out to accommodate growth; at that time, Newnan contained only a few houses and two schools. In 1916 local men organized what would become the town's first library with $1,500 from area businesses. In 1920, Newnan became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five council members; it had one school district which included all of downtown Newnan as well as portions of West End and South End neighborhoods. By 1970, however, most of downtown had been torn down to make way for shopping malls; after years of struggle against these developments, Newnan (along with much of Athens-Clarke County) achieved city status on May 1st 1978 under then Mayor Bobby Dodds. The economy has slowly grown since becoming city status; currently large manufacturing businesses include Johnson & Johnson Jnr., PepsiCo Inc., Continental Airlines Co., Coca Cola Refreshment Company (now Kroger), Gibson Guitar Corporation (now Takata), HCA Healthcare LLC ( now Caremark) - all based in or near Atlanta - as well as several small restaurants along US Highway 221 leading into downtown from rural areas within reach of the city limits outside the city limits proper: Brescia's Italian Restaurant on Piedmont Avenue near SR-222 south exit off I-285 eastbound just past Hawkins Bridge Road about 12 miles southwest of Atlanta; Donatello's Pizza & Pasta on Adams Street south exit off I-285 eastbound just past Hawkins Bridge Road about 15 miles southwest of Atlanta; Joe's Pizza & Sports Bar on Greaves Boulevard north exit off I-285 eastbound just past Hawkins Bridge Road about 20 miles southeast of Atlanta Dodds left office after four terms in office to be succeeded by Nathan Deal who also served four terms before leaving office to be succeeded by Casey Cagle who also served four terms before leaving office to be succeeded by Nathan Deal again who also served six terms until he resigned effective September 30th 2017 due to term Limits set by Congress
