Lee recommended that newingan be made an additional capital of Georgia due to its strategic location on Interstate 5 and its proximity to other major cities in Atlanta and Savannah. The first post office in what is now Newnan opened in 1811 under the name "Fulton". The first settler was Alexander Robertson who erected a cabin on land grants given him by James Robertson. That same year, much of present-day downtown including parts of Old Town were laid out when Captain John Nicholson set up shop there as well as two stores and one blacksmith shop along Broad Street between High Street and Watkins Avenue (now Grady Highway). By 1830, many homes had been built across Broad Street which served as mercantile centers with general storekeepers being able to sell goods such as flour, pork products, saddles and horseshoes; also bought items could be traded such as crops or minerals mined near Americus or Shellsburg northeast of town. In 1834 Jamesonner sold most of his holdings to Wm Nicholson who named it "Newnan". Englishman Samuel Whitehead laid out part of today's east side while Nathan Bedford Forrest laid out some land further west on what would later become I-5 north of town limits then named Greenwood Heights before finally naming it "Newnan" after himself in 1845 following his purchase from Nicholson .
