She worked as an errand girl for local farmers until she could get her own farmstead two years later. After becoming active with several organizations including Tuskegee Airmen Women’s Club and First Baptist Church—both founded by black women—Bowers eventually purchased 1/2 mile (0 km) east of downtown to build what would eventually become Addies Restaurant & Bakery Ltd., which prospered until its abrupt closure due to economic problems in 2009. In 1960, Drayton White became the first African American elected mayor of any major city when he won election to succeed Art Acevedo after serving five terms as Mayor of Miami Beach, Florida; Acevedo had been mayor since 1958 before moving up toAtlantato take office at that time[2]. In 1970-1972 he also served as City Manager for Atlanta pending appointment by then Governor Jimmy Carter following his term as President Richard Meeks's Assistant Director for Urban Affairs[3]. Following White's victory over incumbent Roy Barnes III,[4], development began rapidly throughout downtown areas adjoining Aquarium Park including additions such as Dunwoody Town Center Mall (opened 1984), Crossroads Plaza Shopping Center (1986), Midtown Skyway Housing developments completed between 1990-1992[5][6], Peachtree Plaza [7]--later renamed Piedmont Plaza followed suit--just across Interstate 285 from downtown into northeast Atlanta; this occurred concurrent with Atlantas great expansion northward both politically and geographically through annexation by surrounding counties resulting ultimately in more than 12 million人 living within Greater Atlanta boundaries by 2000[8][9]; however despite this growth much remained unchanged or deteriorated form prior development patterns particularly around Dohertytown center only increasing crime rates along I-285 corridor leading away from Downtown while also contributing significant amounts to air pollution adversely impacting respiratory health especially children breathing nearby asthma clinics
