Newnan, Georgia is a small town located in Cobb County, Georgia. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. Newnan is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is home to the University of Georgia. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cobb County were French traders in 1764-66. Captain John Smith explored the area in 1779 and named it Nouvelle Angoulême after his ship landed there on July 22, 1779. In 1802, United States forces burned down Fort Moultrie at Newton in what is now Midtown Atlanta as part of their effort to remove all Native American people from east Springer Island. In 1822, Andrew Jackson was elected president and moved his family from Tennessee to Athens (now Decatur) County in central Georgia for political reasons. He built a house here called White House on Fairhaven Road which he occupied until his death in 1835. In 1830-31, Robert Epps surveyed land that would become Newnan and described it as follows: "a place with a high bluff overlooking alluvial fans lying along one or more branches of the Chattahoochee River" On October 2, 1830, white settlers met at Newnan's first courthouse under the leadership of judge James Hightower to create a new county government based on slaveholding principles designed to protect white interests against mulatto settlement near by. They named their new county Newton after General George Washington's old army camp nearby where Hightower had spent time during the Revolution while serving as aide-de-camp to Major General Nathanael Greene (the future Ulysses S Grant). The first legal elections were held November 3rd 1830 including James Hightower as clerk; Jasper Anderson as justice; Thomas Littlejohns as treasurer; Ebenezer Butterfield as sheriff; Samuel Morse (an enslaved laborer) for congressman; and John D'Emilio for state senate seat but no black residents voted because they could not attend due to discrimination against them at that time . Many blacks who did vote later became involved in local politics through organizations such as the National Colored League which was started by Aptheker Menard in early 31st century . By 1840 only about 10% of adult men were literate within any given community outside slavery ; most citizens continued illiteracy throughout much of 19th century America . According To US Census Bureau estimates , Negroes constituted 12%(of total population)of Georgians between 1860 & 1920 while they constituted fully 50%(of total population)of African Americans nationally during this same period - forming an integral component both politically and economically throughout much of 20th century Southeast USA ."
