Newnan is a city in the Georgia mountains, about an hour's drive from Atlanta. The population was 25,585 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Newnan is known for its natural gas production and as the home of Pratt & Whitney's world-leading engine manufacturing plant. A post office called Newnan was established in 1819, and remained in operation until 1959. The town was named after Colonel James Newnham (1785-1846), a United States Army officer who served under General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. In 1830, John Troup founded a small grocery store on present day Spring Street in what is now downtown Newnan. It became a retail center for area farmers and settlers and eventually grew into a large city with over 100 stores by 1850. In 1860, new Ulysses S Grant bought 7 acres (24,000 m²) of land north of present day Main Street in what is now downtown Newnan to build his plantation house called "Grant House". After serving as President Ulysses S. Grant's private secretary from 1869 to 1870 and again from 1875 to 1879, he donated this land to the town for use as their Courthouse Square – also known as "Grant Park". The first courthouse built in Newnan was Goodwin's courthouse which opened on October 12th, 1865. On October 3rd 1865 Amos J Butler officiated at dedication ceremonies attended by Governor Benjamin Hawkins and Mayor Isaac Paulding The building cost $2,500 and it consisted of three stories with two side gables flanked by two stories within an Italianate style arcade window surmounted by an octagon dome cover used until 1913 when it was replaced by another court building designed by noted architect Lorenzo Lemmon that cost $14,000 . A one story schoolhouse also operated here from 1865-1868 before being replaced by a larger structure erected on Native American land east of where current Main Street exists today which still stands today . In 1870 Drury built his largest business yet; an insurance company that became First National Bank Of Georgia (FNB). At that time FNB occupied five buildings: One on each corner of Church Street between Broadwalk Road And High Street along with branch Offices located at Third Avenue South between High Street And Forsyth Avenue across From Patton’s Bistro located at 5th Ave South near Peachtree Mall - all within blocks or walking distance from each other! In 1903 First National Bank moved uptown to its current location just west of Center square where it remains today! That same year Second National Bank also relocated uptown becoming Union Trust Company soon afterwards followed suit later that year by Citizens State Bank taking over Citizens bank building vacated by FNB days earlier! With so many businesses active within such close proximity there must have been some pretty intense competition for customers & space! By 1907 only four years after incorporation citizens had raised enough money to erect their own brick jail/courthouse which actually opened November 10th 1908 – one week aheadof schedule due to construction delays caused mostly due To bad weather conditions!! During World War I both First National Bank & Second NationalBank were closed due to lack of funds but reopened promptly afterwards once war ended! Just prior too WWI Third National Banks Building collapsed killing several people including CEO Wm Hargrave – fortunately no one lost any lives inside tho !! By 1930 only three years after incorporation citizens had again raised enough money so they could erect their own brick jail/courthouse which actually opened November 17th 1930 - less than 2 weeks premature because OF THE COST OF ADDITIONAL BUILDING DESIGN AND LENGTHY DELAYS CAUSED BY WEATHER CONDITIONS!! This last brick courthouse saw much action during WWII when newly annexed Cobb County experienced some very heavy fighting adjacentTo main street!!! Finally closing shop circa 1960′s when new government buildings were constructed nearby!! Today you can still see evidence remainingOf old courthouses door handles & trim etc…It’s amazing how quickly change can happen in rural areas like this one especially since our economy has continuedTo grow more recent generations haven’t hadAs much exposure tO similar lifestyles & typesOf businesses havingonce existedHere!!!!

The post grew rapidly thanks to its location on the river and its access to water supplies. In 1811, Newnan became an incorporated town with a population of 507 people. The first school in Newnan opened in 1812 and the first store in 1816. By 1830, Newnan had become an important commercial center with over 10 businesses located in downtown. By 1850, Newnan had attracted settlers from all over Georgia including Alabama who founded several churches here including First Baptist Church which still operates today. Many new businesses were started during this time such as Cane Creek Coal Company which mined coal near downtown until it closed down in 1920; Johns-Manville Paper Products which manufactured paper products for local newspapers; Southern Iron Works which built railroads around town; and fertilizer manufacturer Gulf Fuel & Fertilizer Company before it merged into Dow Chemical Company in 1959.During World War II, many jobs were created here thanks to munitions production by Dow Chemical company such as munitions distribution center and aircraft engine plant - both now demolished. After World War II ended, many small businesses closed down or moved out of town while others thrived like Donelson Furniture whose products are still sold locally today (www.donelsonfurnitureusa.com).
