Moultrie is a small town in northwestern Georgia, United States. The population was 1,663 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Fulton and Cobb counties. The first permanent settler in Moultrie was John Robert Moultrie, who arrived in 1793. He had been born near Savannah, Georgia. In 1809, he married Sarah Ann Woodward and moved to what is now Moultrie with her. They raised six children there: three boys and three girls. Moultrie was founded by Capt. Nathan McMillan and his men when they came across a group of Cherokee Indians living along the Chattahoochee River in 1802. The Cherokees were farmers who lived near the river but were forced to move due to white settlers encroaching on their land. When Captain McMillan found out that the Cherokees needed help farming because their own land was being taken away, he offered them his home as a place to stay until they could find another place to live. Captain McMillan also built a cabin for himself and his family which still stands today in central square just off of Main Street." In 1821-22, Capt David Hensley surveyed what is now Moultrie from land grant #5 from President James Kenedy; it extended from present day Paulding County line northward into Cobb County on what are now US Highways 71/2 & 321 east of downtown Moultie (the current location). This portion of Hensley's survey is commonly known as "Hensley's Survey". On July 2nd 1830 Samuel Morehead sold 640 acres (24 ha) southeast of modern day Moultiere for $4 per acre ($48 total purchase price). This tract forms part of present day Upson County . Farming began on this farm about 1840 utilizing both swampy lands drained by creeks as well as better cultivated fields watered by surface runoffs from mountain streams running through the area today." In 1859 J F Walls purchased 1 910 acres (6 km²) located northeast of present-day Moultiere for $12 per acre ($288 total purchase price). Wallis later donated this tract to become part of Oak Ridge National Laboratory where it remains today." A post office called “Moltrie” opened in 1881 under mail order service operated by Postmaster General Edward Smith at Knoxville, Tennessee under the name “Newbernburgh” before moving to what is now downtown Moulthaire in 1886." In 1907-1908 A&W Restaurants Incorporated established itself at 208 Broadway NE which would become their corporate headquarters until 1991 when they moved uptown into One Bryant Park NE." "As early as 1916 an oil well named 'Oconee' was drilled west northwest corner lot blockage 3rd street SW corner lots 5th and 6th streets NW intersection'. By 1924 production ceased due lack of water supply so operators changed name to Gulf Refining Company Limited Oil Well No 4.'
