In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Newton Mill near Moultrie while they were supplies carrying food for army troops stationed there; many civilian casualties resulted including seven women and six children who died when their homes were destroyed along with several stores within minutes of one another across Newton Mill Road (now Snell Avenue). This event is known as Battle of Newton Mill which helped spur President Abraham Lincoln's decision not to continue fighting that war afteratlanta was captured by Union forces early that year

Moultrie, Georgia was founded in 1785 by Captain James Moultrie and his family. It is the oldest town in the Georgia Peach State. The city was named for Colonel John Moultrie, an officer who fought with General George Washington during the Revolution. After the end of the Revolution, John Moultrie became a landowner in what is now Moultrie. He built a gristmill, which he used to produce flour for local markets. In 1807, Colonel John Moultrie married Sarah Hill, who later became a United States Senator from Georgia. The couple had two children: James and Sally. In 1811, Colonel John Moultrie sold his mill to Alexander McMillan. The mill continued to be operated by McMillan until 1902 when it was bought by J.P. Morgan & Co., Incorporated (JPMorgan). Today, the mill facade remains standing as reminder of this important piece of Georgian history
