In 1881, Moultrie was the first city in Georgia to adopt a gas light system. The town was named for General James Moultrie who had led the American Expedition against Mexico in 1846. One of the original owners of the Patent Gas Light Company, John Sargent, donated land to build a municipal court and library on which city officials could conduct business. In 1896, Moultrie became one of fifty cities in Georgia to implement Daylight Saving Time. One of optical industry's earliest pioneers, David Brewster Killian (1812-1883), invented an early form of reflex plate glass lens that allowed photography with a simple camera obscura. Killian's innovation helped pave the way for modern day digital cameras and may also be credited with helping develop motion picture film technology. In 1868,Killian founded what is now known as Brewster & Killian Glass Manufacturing Company in Moultrie with his brother-in-law Samuel Playfair. The company manufactured several types of reflex lenses including those used in photography and motion pictures until it closed its doors in 1916.
