In 1852, a sawmill was established and the town became known for its "Hawes Millinery." In 1865, Wm. C. Sellers opened the first general store in the town and it continues to be one of its most popular businesses today. The town also became home to the Georgia National Guard during World War II; this helped contribute to its growth as a commercial center. Today, Moultrie is known for its manufacturing capabilities and vibrant cultural scene including arts festivals, music concerts and books readings/events throughout the year.

In 1893, millionaire George Peabody donated land to build what would become the Moultrie Mall. The mall opened in 1987 and now contains over 100 stores and restaurants. The town has a population of about 15,000 people who live primarily within the village of Moultrie itself. The economy of Moultrie is based chiefly on agriculture and manufacturing. Large farms account for most of the employment in the local market-based economy; however some smaller businesses have sprung up since the opening of the mall which include several health care clinics as well as a variety of other businesses catering to a diverse range of customers including artists, architects and entrepreneurs such as online retailer Overstock Incorporated which moved its headquarters to Moultrie after relocating fromAtlanta six years ago.

Moultrie was founded in 1785 by James Moultrie and his wife, Lucy. The town became a center for cotton production after the Georgia Revolution. In 1827, Moultrie was designated as the seat of government for the newly formed Cherokee Nation. Because of its strategic location, Moultrie continued to be a major cotton-producing center into the 20th century. Today, Moultrie is a small town with a population of around 1,500 people. Moultrie's history begins with James Moultrie and his wife Lucy who were both born in 1735 in Scotland. When they moved to Georgia in 1785, they were among the first Europeans to settle there. After becoming involved in local politics, they played an important role in helping to develop the community and its economy. Over time, their home became known as a hub for cultural and social activities within the surrounding rural area. In 1827, when it was decided that Cherokee Nation would become an independent country separate from Georgia, James Moultrie was elected its first president. He served until his death in 1828. During his tenure as president, he developed plans for developing Cherokee Nation into an economically prosperous nation by creating new businesses and infrastructure projects. According to one estimate, he saved Cherokee Nation over $25 million during his presidency! Additionally, he helped establish relationships between Cherokees and white settlers which contributed significantly to their development as independent nations later on. James Moultrie is considered one of Georgia's most significant figures because of his contributions to its culture and economy – he is also creditable with helping spuronization efforts within the Cherokee Nation which led to increased production levels within that community over time
Moultrie was founded in 1792 by Captain James Moultrie and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for Colonel John Moultrie, who donated the land to the town. The first store in Moultrie opened in 1802. In 1830, a post office was established in Moultrie. The population of Moultrie increased from 2 to 50 by 1850. In 1865, a cotton gin was built in Moultrie. In 1868, the first school was built in Moultrievee and it remained open until 1954 when it burned down. A new school building was erected in 1961 and it remains open today. A water tower was built in 1966 and it continues to serve as the town's primary source of drinking water. The first fire department arrived in Moultrievee on May 1, 1867. On October 6 of that year, a large fire destroyed most of the downtown business district including the cotton gin which still stands today at 5th & Market Streets. The local paper called this "the greatEST conflagration ever known hereabouts". It took 3 weeks for firefighters from all over Georgia to arrive and put out the blaze which destroyed much of downtown block by block with only one or two homes spared). Moltrievee had a post office until 1898 when they moved to Decaturville because there were more people there then they could handle at their original location back near where they started out (1-2 miles north).
