In 1825, Captain Elijah Smith purchased 640 acres (2 km²) on which he erected a house and began to cultivate sugarcane. He named his plantation after Colonel Robert Ewing Caldwell (1792-1868), who served as Secretary of War under President James Kildare Grant (1833- 1865). During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Captains Smith and others like him became landholders through purchases or inheritance rather than through violence or war service as had been customary during Reconstruction times elsewhere in Georgia. This change led to increased social tension between African Americans and white landowners because it meant that black men could own property but could not vote or hold office unless they achieved passage from white owners at election time. In 1870, Captain David Waddell arrived with his family from Lumpkin County,Georgia to start farming cotton on 10 acres near modern day Roswell which he called "Waddell's Cotton Plantation". Waddell became known throughout south central Georgia for his great variety of crops - cotton alone accounted for more than 50% of all produce grown in southcentral Georgians in 1830 – 1860! His son Alfred also became well known as a successful farmer and business man in south central Georgians before moving westward into Oklahoma Territory where he founded Lawton Mills & Company Limited Partnership some years later
