Moultrie was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,354 at the 2000 census. It is now an unincorporated community in Appling County. Moultrie was founded in 1821 by James Moultrie and his family as part of the Chickasaw Nation. In 1833, Moultrie became the capital of the newly formed Georgia Territory; it remained so until its secession from the Union in 1861. The town had a post office from 1834 to 1865 and a school from 1835 to 1863. James Moultrie was born on October 21, 1785, near Lampersville in western Cumberland County, Virginia. He emigrated to what is now Fulton County with his family in 1821 and settled on a tract of land that he had acquired from the Chickasaw Nation. At first he managed only one farm but soon began acquiring other tracts and establishing himself as an agriculturist and business man within the new territory. By 1830, he had organized a small town called "Moultrie" on the site of present day Moultriesburg within limits set by him for its development as a commercial center for surrounding counties. In 1840 James Moultrie married Anna Warnke (died 1886). They raised six children: Sarah Ann (1841-1927), Johnathan(1843-1925), Anna Louise (1845-?), Martha Jane (1849-1900), James Wirtz (census 1870), and Edward Monroe(census 1880). With his wife's help, James Moultrie built two churches: First Baptist Church which stood until 1889 and Second Baptist Church which still stands today across from First Baptist Church on Gunters Mill Road in present day Appling County . In 1850 James Wirtz arrived from Tennessee with his family; they soon erected another church west of First Baptist Church - this time called Godfrey Chapel - also known as "The Mouse House". For many years this chapel functioned both as a meeting place for local farmers who gathered there for religious services or culture Shockley says "the people hereabouts were very much interested in Shakespearian plays." Reverend Wirtz reputedly became proficient at reciting Shakespeare's works while seated inside "the Mouse House". Unfortunately during Reconstruction times this type of activity found its way into forbidden areas where authoritarians such as General Nathan Bedford Forrest could not tolerate any form of worship being conducted without their approval or control over society at large... After Reverend Wirtz' death in 1893 APPling Countys first Presbyterian Minister since before statehood named Rev A C Durham officiated at services at Godfrey Chapel until about 1954 when it was torn down due to fire damage . In addition to worshipping at Godfrey Chapel Rev A C Durham served also as pastor emeritus of First PresbyterianChurch which still stands today across from First BaptistChurch on Gunters Mill Road between Appling & Muscogee Counties
