This purchase marked the beginning of downtown development on what is now known as “the Square” – one block long with four stories tall buildings surrounding it! In 1892 Mayor Alfred Crain dedicated Spring Street (now Jackson Avenue) between Front Street and Government House Road as the first street in downtown Moultrie proper! By 1925 Downtown had grown to encompass all of present-day downtown including much of Lumpkin County lining its eastern border! One significant event that took place during this time period was the dedication of Memorial Park on November 11th, 1924 by Mayor Harry Daugherty – which represented not only an Important milestone for our city but also laid out future plans for our Municipal Center which remains open today as our primary municipal hall! Many other events occurred during this era such as: The inauguration ceremonies honoring Presidents Harrison and Coolidge; The dedication ceremony recognizing Stonewall Jackson’sBattle Creek Campaign; The naming of Lady Bird Johnson Presidential Library; And countless others that are still commemorated through special programs held annually throughout those years! The late 1800s were a tumultuous time for Atlanta - starting with Sherman's March through Georgia in 1864 he began tearing down old Confederate battle sites throughout the state - most notably at Peachtree Court House where General Burnside surrendered his army following dayslong combat there. As Atlanta began rebuilding post-war some cotton mills closed their doors because they could no longer compete against newly built synthetic mill facilities overseas whileAtlanta experienced rapid population growth fueled largely by Japanese immigration – more than doubling its size between 1890-1920 alone!
