Moultrie, Georgia is located in the U.S. state of Georgia. The city was founded in 1824 by General James Wilkinson and named for him, Moultrie County being one of its original counties. In 1874, Moultrie became a town and was renamed for two Confederate generals- John C. Breckinridge (1810-68) and Pee Wee Lee (1814-72). Both men were killed during the Civil War. The City’s first gun magazine opened in 1876 and operated until it closed in 1932 due to financial problems. Today there is a small museum located within the old post office building that houses several firearms from throughout the history of the city including an early model rifle belonging to General Wilkinson himself!

Moultrie is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,100 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name Moultrie comes from English and French words for "mound" or "hill." The town was founded in 1802 by John Moultrie and his family, who called it Greenville because of the green fields that surrounded their farmstead. In 1815, John's son James Moultrie established a post office in the town and named it for himself. By 1830, the post office had been renamed Moultrie after James' father-in-law, General David Blount. In 1837, Colonel Robert Ewell bought land located between Moultrie and Decatur counties to build what would become Fortee Park. He named it Fortegee because he thought it would make a strong military garrison against Indian attacks on his other properties. The fort served as a base of operations for Confederate forces during the American Civil War until 1865 when it was destroyed by Union troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. In 1865, most of what is now Moultrie were burned down by Union troops under General Forrest during an effort to destroy all Confederate munitions stores in southeast Georgia. Only two buildings still stand today: courthouse and old schoolhouse (now used as apartments). After Reconstruction ended in America in 1865 following the American Civil War, many white Georgians moved into what is now Moultrie while black Georgians left to find new homes in adjacent settlements such as Decatur or Lawrenceville. With few exceptions until recent decades (the late 20th century through present), most people associated with Moltiere have been white AngloSaxon citizens since its founding date more than 200 years ago!
