Moultrie is a small town in southeastern Georgia, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Athens. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County School District. The Moultrie post office was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1984. The first settler on the current site of Moultrie was James McMurtry, who arrived from Kentucky with his family in 1827. He helped found the town and built a cabin which can still be seen today. Moultrie began to grow rapidly during the late 1800s as cotton plantations were developed along the coastal plain to the north and west of town. By 1900, nearly all of what is now Moultrie had been purchased by farmers. In 1916, local man J.B Fenton completed construction of what is now known as Fenton Bridge over Sandy Creek - one of only two bridges remaining across Sandy Creek before its destruction by floodwaters in 1913. During World War II, Moultrie became an important transit stop for troops transferring supplies between surrounding rural communities and army camps near Athens. After hostilities ended, many former military personnel returned to Moultrie and continued farming until their retirements or death; some remain buried here today among the buildings from early days of town development. In 1957, residents voted to become a city under state law; but due to lack of resources and low population density (compared to larger cities), this didn't happen until 1973 when voters passed an ordinance establishing a city government with six-member council including one member from each ward within city limits). In 1990–1991 Mayor Wendell Berry formed a committee headed by City Manager Donnie Dillard that recommended annexation into Athens County; however this recommendation was not accepted by county commissioners because they felt that annexation would create too much competition for services offered by Athens County governments east of I-85/I- 16 while also adding unnecessary expenses without corresponding benefits such as more jobs or tax revenue for Moultrie citizens
