Moultrie is a city in Spalding County, Georgia, United States. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. Moultrie is the county seat of Spalding County. It was founded by John Moultrie and named for him. The first post office in Moultrie was established on October 15, 1827. The first store in town was built by Asahel Durham and named the American Emporium. In 1851, Alexander Caldwell opened the Caldwell Store No. 1 on Main Street which became one of the most popular stores in town until it closed its doors in 1957. In 1898, Denton Hogg opened the Hogg Millinery Shop on Depot Street which remains one of Moultrie's most iconic businesses to this day. In 1901, Gussie Cobb founded Cobb’s Lumber Company which still operates out of their building on Commerce Avenue today. This business started with 9 acres of land that had been donated to them by Trustees John Pemberton and Willis Dixon as part of a plan to create an industrial park near downtown Moultrielette Mills during what would become known as “The Great Atlanta Railroad Scandal” (1896-1901). Prior to this time there were only small farmers operating around here; however due to this new development everything changed with Cobb’s acquisition of over 50 acres of agricultural land just outside town limits – making him one of the largest landowners in Georgia at that time! Cobb created what would eventually become known as The Park District which included much more than just lumberjacking – he also began developing some very famousAtlanta landmarks such as Piedmont Park and Constitution Hall! After World War II ended things quickly went downhill for Moultrie & many other small towns throughout GA thanks largely to deindustrialization & federal government policies favoring suburban growth over rural economies across all 5 southern US states! Downtown businesses slowly shuttered or went out of business while sprawl farmed out much needed jobs helping drive up costs for local residents coupled with ever-rising transportation fares making living standards increasingly unaffordable for many families! By 2000, only a few scattered businesses remained open along main streets within downtown cores across entire metro cities!! There has since been some resurgence (albeit limited) interest in resurrecting/reviving downtown areas throughout metro Atlanta but primarily it seems driven by nostalgia amongst older generations looking back on when things were “better”? It definitely feels like something needs to happen soon if we want our city(s)to stay alive & vibrant beyond 2020!!
