Moultrie is a town in and the county seat of Cherokee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It was founded by General Hugh Moultrie in 1811 as a result of his purchase of 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land from the Creek Nation. The town became a post-office on October 25, 1818 and an incorporated municipality on May 20, 1865. Moultrie is one of only two remaining towns in Georgia that were created as a result of fortuitous events rather than through village growth or annexation. Moultrie's original name was "The Townsite." In 1811 General Hugh Moultrie purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) from the Creek Nation for $5 per acre ($100 total). General Moultrie named the land "Moultrie" after himself and then donated it to local churches for use as evangelistic tracts and cemetery sites. In 1865, when Appalachian Railroad reached Moultrie via what is now called US 231/441 east of town, incorporation was proposed but denied due to lack of funds. On July 4th 1870 voters approved incorporation with 2 voting members and 9 signatures required. The first mayor was A H Pope who served until 1875 when he resigned because he did not have enough money to keep up with the city's expenses On November 3rd 1905 Mayor John Witherspoon announced plans to demolish all but one house in order to make way for new housing developments which would be funded by private contributions instead thereof A campaign began to save masonry from demolition which eventually succeeded and all but one house survived . The last house demolition took place on December 16th 2005 . The following year on February 14th 1906 a tornado touched down just outside town limits damaging over 50 homes including many structures within town limits that still stand today
