The first post office in Moultrie opened on November 3, 1811, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 31, 1821. The first store built inMoultriewas built by Elijah Parish and operated from a log cabin near present day Second Street and Park Avenue. In 1829, General Andrew Jackson visitedMoultreyand conferred with its founder about forming a government for East Tennessee which would include part of what is now Georgia. On February 9, 1830 Moultrey's charter was issued as a town under the provisions of the Georgia Constitution ratified that year. In 1840, when Cherokee Nation withdrew their application to become a territory within the United States following Indian Removal Act of 1830,[1]Moultrie became known as "the last Cherokee stronghold".[2] During World War II much activity took place at nearby Fort Benning Army Base due to its proximity to strategic targets such as airfields throughout Southeast Asia;[3][4] however no combat operations took place at or withinMouthtiere during that time period
