Moultrie is a small town in southwest Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1827 by John Moultrie and his family. The Moultries are the namesake of the town. Moultrie is located on the Dahlonega River, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Savannah and 45 miles (72 kilometers) south of Atlanta. It has a population of around 2,800 people as of 2010. The first settlers were Methodists who arrived in 1827 from Scotland. After a few years they left because they found it hard to get along with other faiths. In 1830, Methodist missionaries opened up a school in what is now Moultrie and started teaching African Americans there. In 1840, another group of Methodists moved to Moultrie from Savannah and began teaching white children too. The Methodists wanted to keep their black students separate so they named the school “White” after one of their own members – John Whitehead – who had done this for many years before them. In 1887, when Atlanta became an city, Whitehead donated land for a public library which still stands today in downtown Moultrie. By 1895, most white families had left for better opportunities elsewhere in the country while black families continued living together at Whitehead Park until moving out into their own neighborhoods during desegregation efforts starting in Montgomery County beginning with Bobbitt v Sims (1948). By 1990 only 5% of residents were black while 95% were white according to census data taken place then; however this percentage has since dropped below 50%. Moultrie was founded in 1824 by John Moultrie, a cotton planter and surveyor. The town was named for Colonel James Moultrie, who had served in the Georgia militia during the American Revolution. In 1830, Colonel Moultrie sold his interest in the town to Captain Nathaniel Lyon of Augusta, Georgia. Captain Lyon renamed Moultrie "Atlanta" after his home city in England.
