Monroe is a city in and the county seat of Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 139,890 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Fulton County by metropolitan area size. The town continued to be named Monroe until it changed its name to Atlanta on December 15, 1907, when Atlanta became the state capital. In 1837, General Nicholas Biddle organized what would become known as the Second Seminole War against Creek Indians in what is now Alabama and Mississippi. After being soundly defeated near Mobile Bay on July 6th with few injuries received by his army members or damage done to Indian homes or crops (the Creek were either already extinct as a people or had fled), General Biddle turned back toward his forces under Major General William Hartsfield at Chickamauga River Bridge on September 17th due to fear that he could not pursue them further because he lacked horses and artillery support; Cherokee Chief Joseph Hawkins intervened on behalf of Gen’l Biddle's forces and successfully prevented any decisive battle between American forces and the Creeks which would have resulted in major loss for both sides involved; this victory halted Confederate ambitions to extend their control over much of east Tennessee into north Georgia Monroeville Township formed from parts of Rome Borough on November 3rd 1800 according to an ordinance passed at Pontotoc Convention Meeting held prior thereto; Sections 2 Range 1 5 Newton Road lay within section lines then surveyed & laid out by Ebenezer Peake about 4 miles westward from present limits Chilton Township form an original part thereof bounded North East by Chilton Ferry Road & South West by Spring Street Congaree Township form another original part thereof bounded NorthEast BY Old Decatur Road & SouthWest BY Spring Street .
