In 1764, when Andrew Johnson became Presidentof America after being elected to the Senate from Virginia during the American Revolution, he recommended that Georgia be set up into a separate nation with its own government and courts--an idea which was accepted by George Washington and his cabinet. In 1767, Johnson established Stono Ferry Landing on Savannah River to serve as a junction between Indian Creek country to the north and settlers living along European-owned land to the east; this connection later became known as Vanzantown Junction before it was renamed Monroe in 1802 when sectionalism ended any potential duplication between western Kentucky and eastern Tennessee counties newly formed from parts of VA
