It is named after James Monroe, the first U.S. president and father of the American Revolution. The town began as a small settlement on the east side of what is now Clarke County in 1821 when three men, Nathan Hipps, John Hogg, and Amos Nettleton bought land fromability farmer George Whitehead for $5 per acre. The men laid out a village on a rise near present-day Cochran Road and donated the land to the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1825 for use as their Sabbath school ground. A post office was established in 1826 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1830 two brothers by the name of McIntyre built a log cabin on Topeka Hill above present-day Monroeville to serve as their farmstead headquarters while they surveyed land for future villages within their original boundaries. In 1831 they sold their holdings to David Cobb and his brother Jesse for $10 per acre; these two settlements became known as Cobbville and McIntyreville respectively before becoming incorporated into Monroe Township when that township was created from portions of Clarke County in 1851. In 1833 James Fenton founded an iron works here which became one of America's leading manufacturers of wrought iron products until its closure during World War II due to wartime production restrictions; today only relics remain from this manufacturer including an old furnace dating back to 1840 located just outside town limits near Masonic Lodge #5A (now known as Community Hall). A cotton gin operated by Elijah Cotton between 1850 and 1860 also developed here; today only one deep well remains beneath town limits used during this time period forurden collection purposes only yards away from where many homes were built beginning around that time The Transcontinental Railway arrived in sections through various parts of Georgia starting with extensions through McIntyreville early during its construction run but finally reaching Auburn Junction about 8 miles northeast of Monroe late during 1870–71 without passing through any village or hamlet along its route however some residents did move into nearby towns such as Decatur (then called Dunwoody) prior to final junction there In 1893 Monroeville water tower collapse killed five people including Mayor William Morrow who had been driving upriver daily with members of his staff attempting unsuccessfully to raise money via subscriptions among local farmers ransom payment being offered by respective state governments then making an artificial lake several miles downstream at what later became known locally simply as "the Tank" . When repairs were finally made 9 years later all 5 bodies were recovered exceptingMayor Morrow’s body still rests under nearly century old tree next door still unidentified . Amongst those relocated here following Tower collapse included surgeon Dr John Coker who would eventually opencentered hospital now Park Avenue Hospital & Clinics located south across street from Masonic Lodge #5A today

The town was named after General James Wilkinson (1773-1836), who fought in the American Revolution and won an important victory against British forces at Battle of Monmouth on November 15, 1814. In 1819, Wilkinson built a small log cabin near what is now the intersection of Upson Road and Clinton Avenue to serve as his headquarters during the early days of Georgia's statehood. In 1865, when Confederate general Robert Ewell retreated from Dalton with his army following its defeat at Kennesaw Mountain, he stopped at Monroe for dinner before continuing his march through central Georgia. Monroe became an agricultural center due to its natural resources such as cotton and peanuts; it also produced tobacco until about 1930. The first post office opened in Monroe on December 4, 1821; it was called "New Albany". In 1830, four acres were donated to form what later became the town square; this land was included in section 6 of the original charter for Monroe which defined its boundaries: east on Upson Road to Clinton Avenue south on Jones Street east to Washington Street north on York Boulevard westward to Auburn Avenue (now Courtland Avenue). The first schoolhouse in Monroe was built there in 1828 by Rev. Drury Price; it burned down soon afterward but replaced with a larger building that still stands today across from First Baptist Church (later known as Emmanuel Baptist Church). The first white teacher hired in Monroe wasn’t even born here: Mrs Fenton arrived here from Decatur County just after Christmasservicing her students at First Presbyterian Church while her husband attended battle duty with General Nathan Bedford Forrest’s cavalry brigade northeast of Atlanta along I-85W into Chattanooga Territory where he led some successful raids against Union forces and captured supplies for Forrest’s command while under Federal escort – not quite 2 miles away from where today's Second Baptist Church stands! Mrs Fenton continued teaching ‘underprivileged’ children vocal lessons until she retired from teaching around 1870 when there were only 8 whites among over 100 African Americans teachers working within several hundred black familieschooling grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade inside Ensign Elementary School located southeast corner of Square off Courtland Ave & Courtland Ave NE near current day home plate fields @ Turner Field !! Monroe was founded in 1825 by the brothers John and James Monroe. The town grew quickly due to its location at the intersection of two major trade routes, the Savannah and Atlanta Railroad and the Georgia Railroad. In 1829, Monroe became a state capital. The Monroe Canal was built in 1834 to connect the Chattahoochee River with the Atlantic Ocean. The canal helped to revive fortune for Monroe residents, and it also helped to spur development in nearby Decatur. In 1840, President James K. Polk designated Monroeville as the site of a military academy for United States soldiers. The academy eventually became known as West Point College. In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Mississippi and captured Jackson; this led to Union General Ulysses S. Grant’s march on Memphis that year.
