Monroe, Georgia is a city located in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 25,392 at the 2010 census and is the county seat of Monroe County. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The historical center of Monroe is on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and includes several restored cotton plantations as well as an agricultural museum and small shopping district on Mill Street. The name "Monroe" comes from two Cherokee words: wenoo (a place where cotton can be grown) and haniwa (hill). The first settler in what is now Monroe was Johnmontee ibn Attiyah, who arrived in 1785 with his family from Arabia Plantations near Mecca. He named his new land after James Monroe, then newlyicer of Virginia’s territory west of Charleston. When Tennessee separated from Alabama in 1819, it too included Monroe; though Tennessee became a slave state until 1861 when it seceded to become Confederate States of America. In 1828 Augustus Troup purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) east of town from James Montero for $4 per acre ($140/km²). Troup gave this parcel away to charity for use as a parkland nucleus around which future development could take place by deed or donation subject to approval by government planners In 1830 Congress authorized construction on Kennesaw Mountain Railway between Athens, Georgia (then within Cherokee Nation) and Marietta, Georgia –thus giving citizens living north of Interstate 85 access toAtlanta through their towns while keeping them under control through transportation infrastructure developments southward In 1840 Jno.[nm] Doane built a sawmill at current site on Chattahoochee River opposite present-day town limits; this mill continued operations until 1907 When Doane's son Wm., also a sawyer began operating it using power generated by nearby dams Wegmans store opened next door in 1895 along with numerous other businesses including post office(1896), nightclub(1901), bank(1909), grocery store(1911), hotel(1920), restaurant(1927–1945) during rapid growth & annexation period following World War I era most pronounced industrialization downtown […]. Monroe is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of theAtlanta metropolitan area. The first European to visit Monroe was Captain John Smith on October 17, 1724 while exploring what is now known as Gwinnett County. He named the creek "Cobb" after General James Cobb, who had been killed in action against the Creek Nation some years earlier. In 1802, Governor Thomas Macon ordered six white men and ten Cherokee Indians to set out from Smyrna for what would become America's first colonizing venture west of the Appalachian Mountains. They were led by Andrew Jackson and William Troup with Major George Rogers Clark leading the way behind them on horseback. After reaching Monroe on October 10th they made their camp near what is now Old Fort Pulaski before continuing downriver towards Marietta. On November 12th they reached the Chattahoochee River where they built a small fortification which became known as Fort McAllister (later renamed Fort McNair). On November 14th they founded Athens and began trading with Native Americans along the riverfront there until their arrival in December 1802 when hostilities ceased between American forces and Native Americans over land acquisitions in northeastern Georgia that had not been ratified by Congress yet
