Monroe, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Monroe is located on the Chattahoochee River and is bordered by Morningside Heights to the north, Decatur to the east, and Roswell to the south. The community was laid out in 1836 by John Monroe and named for him. He donated land to make up what is now Monroe Township. A post office was established in 1837, and later renamed Monroeville after John's son-in-law Rev. Elijah Waddell. The first store in town was built by Jno Hite in 1839. In 1840 a school was built northwest of present day Baptist Church; it became known as Monroe Academy in 1861 when it moved from its original location on Main Street to what is now Griggs Avenue. In 1845 a group of businessmen pooled their money and bought 4 lots on which they erected a grist mill that would produce flour for local markets until it closed in 1908 due to economic conditions including low prices for wheat caused by disease outbreaks throughout America during that time period. That mill helped start up what would become one of the early industries in town -wagon making/repairing business started with two men doing repairs for others along Griggs Avenue before becoming an industry unto itself A post office opened at Monroe in 1850 but closed within one year because no letters were received from thence (the name change may have been due to this). In 1861 an academy trustees proposed naming the new school "Monroe College" after president James Buchanan who had recently been elected US President but did not take office yet After some deliberation they decided against it – instead they changed it back to "Monroe Academy" after Rev Dr Elijah Waddell who had given them his support earlier that same year For many years there has been debate as to whether or not Monroeville should be listed on the National Register of Historic Places however currently there does not seem any plan or indication either way about doing so

Monroe was founded in 1821 by General James Wilkinson, who named it after the president of Georgia, James Monroe. In 1835, Wilkinson sold the town to John Wesley Powell for $2 per acre. Powell renamed it Auburn and began developing it into a farming community with cotton plantations. In 1839, Powell donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Monroe for use as a theological college. The college first opened its doors in 1840, and soon became one of the most important educational institutions in southeastern United States. In 1865, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Monroeville was extensively damaged by Confederate invaders. However, restoration Work began in earnest in 1971 and ended in 1984; today much of Monroeville remains substantially unchanged from its pre-conflict days.
