Monroe is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 3,452 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is home to the Monroe University campuses as well as several other businesses and services. The town was first settled in 1819 by Yankees who were looking for land to settle after their victory over British forces at Yorktown. The name comes from John Moncrieffe, a captain in the American Revolution who died in battle near what is now Monroe. The Federal Land Company acquired about 4,000 acres of this land which was eventually divided into two townships: Monroeville and Monroe. In 1837, Monroe elected its first mayor and purchased its own courthouse and jail from the Georgia General Assembly. In 1868, President Andrew Johnson designated it as a seat of government for his new Department of War within central Georgia. This meant that Monroe became an important city with its own police department and fire department as well as its own post office (renamed “Monroe Post” in 1902). The economy of Monroe has been based on agriculture since before it was incorporated into Fulton County. A grocery store opened here in 1916 and continues to be run by the current owners today. Other local businesses include a clothing store, banks, several churches (including one founded by Revs Billy Graham), a doctor’s office, manufacturing plants (which have closed down but are still listed on maps), convenience stores/grocery stores, an auto dealership/repair shop, movie theaters (the only one remaining open today) and more recently some restaurants and bars along with apartment complexes for sale or rent outside of town limits.. A&M University began operations here in 1903 making it one of the earliest universities west of slavery that did not rely on slave labor to support itself until after Reconstruction ended those same years! Today A&M ranks among the top five private universities in America according to Forbes Magazine! With such high-quality education available here for students regardless of economic background or background at all – there can no doubt that Monroe has been an integral part of Georgian culture & history for many years!

Monroe, Georgia is a small town in southern Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Monroe was founded in 1801 by James Monroe and named for him. The town became a stand-alone municipality in 1907 and remained so until it merged with Fulton to form the present-day city of Monroe on January 1, 1959. The first permanent settler in what would become Monroe was John Wilkinson who arrived in 1796. He built an African American church on Buford Street now known as Wilkinson Chapel which served as the community's religious center for over 50 years. In 1801, James Monroe came to Georgia from New York and purchased land including present day Monroe from Wilkinson. He named it after himself in honor of his father who had died two years earlier while serving as U.S. President under George Washington. In 1802, Governor Andrew Jackson appointed John Quincy Adams as the first justice of the peace for this new territory that comprised modern day Fulton and Pickens Counties east of Atlanta – with Paulding Creek flowing through it – making him its first municipal judge and head of government since Indian Removal began more than two centuries earlier!Adams held office until he resigned after being impeached by fellow Republicans during the Nullification Crisis (1809). In 1807, when James Polk was elected president and took office following Andrew Jackson's death, he ordered all federal troops withdrawn from Georgia except for those loyal to Polk but they were not able to leave without incident because James Kenedy had already evacuated them across Cobb County into Alabama prior to Polk taking office! So much for national unity! Monroe grew rapidly due to its strategic location midway between Augusta and Savannah on both sides of a long valley bordered by woods that provided huntinggrounds for white settlers and black Georgians alike; today's downtown area still occupies most of original Wilkinson Chapel site where early businesses such as stores, hotels/motels & restaurants flourished thanks in part to its location directly opposite major transportation hubs like I-85 & GA 400; also close by were banks providing easy access to currency necessary for buying goods then available only at faraway Augusta or Savannah.– see map below: By 1910 there were 532 residents living within City Limits including 511 white citizens (of whom just over half were male) compared with just 36 black citizens; however job opportunities outside City limits remained limited despite population growth beyond industrial production facilities like Ford Motors plant located one mile away inside City Limits proper; streetcar lines ran right past our doors!: Map courtesy: Historic Atlas Of Georgia
