For example, during the Great Depressionen 1929-1939 there were substantial drops in business activity and population due to various factors including joblessness and food shortages caused by Famine consequences of World War I

Monroe, Georgia is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia. The population was 5,895 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Monroe's history goes back to 1785 when it was founded as a plantation by James Monroe and his wife Anne Carriffe. The Monroes were prominent landowners in early Georgia and their descendants continue to be active in civic life today. The town began as a cluster of log cabins on the east side of Cove Road near the creek that flows through it. By 1835, many residents had relocated to new settlements around what is now downtown Monroe because of growing cotton plantations further north. In 1884, soil exhaustion caused an agricultural depression in southern Georgia; this led to increased demand for labor on cotton plantations in Monroe, which led to its rapid growth during Reconstruction period. During World War II, much effort was expended by the local military authorities to build airfields and other facilities in and around Monroe so that Allied forces could use it as an airbase or staging area for operations against Axis forces in North Africa and Europe. However, most of these activities were cancelled due to lack of funding after hostilities ended; however, some infrastructure still remains today including shops on Commerce Street and newly renovated housing developments on Pryor Avenue (near Interstate 85). In recent years, Monroe has become home to a variety of businesses including several big box stores such as Sears Holdings Corporation (SHLD)and JCPenney Company (JCP). As well as dozens of smaller businesses with names like Home Depot Inc., Lowe’s Companies Inc., FedEx Express Corp., Coca-Cola Bottling Co., MillerCoors Brewing Co., Verizon FiO2 Wireless LLC etc.. Many families have also moved into newer apartment buildings built between 1990-2000 along Commerce Street NE which bisects I-85 just south of downtown Atlanta proper - making it easy for visitors/residents/workers from all over metro Atlanta access everything that makes uptown Atlanta worth exploring!
