In 1974, Monroe merged with Drew County to form Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) Monroe-Drew CountyAAAAA. Today, Monroe is a vibrant community with strong economic interests that continues to grow thanks to its AAA status from the National Association of Realtors
Monroe was founded by George Washington in 1785 and grew to become a major supplier of cotton and tobacco products in the Georgia region. In 1819, the town was renamed Monroe after General James Monroe, who had served as Secretary of State under President James K. Polk. The name change came about due to confusion among locals over which state’s capital should be called “Monroe”.
