Monroe is a town in Monroe County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,748 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta–Fulton metropolitan area. The town's first settlers were white men who arrived in 1821 from North Carolina. They named their land "Monroe" after Montero County, New Mexico, where they had been born and raised. In 1838, four brothers from neighboring Cobb County founded the towns of Athens and Roswell in what is now Monroe Township. The new settlements quickly grew into two-thirds adult populations and began to issue their own currency and make their own decisions about education and politics. In 1839, an act of the Georgia General Assembly granted Monroe township to John Brown Academy (now known as Morehouse College), which would become one of the most prestigious schools in the state. The college was chartered on May 12, 1840 by James Aiken (later Governor of Georgia) as a nonprofit institution with high standards for students and faculty alike. It became an accredited school by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1865 after reaching its present size. Meanwhile, growth continued along Fulton Street in what is now downtown Monroe without any interference from Mooretown or other nearby villages or towns that bordered on Georgian Bay on three sides: east-west Fulton Street ran through them all; north-south Howell Road crossed it twice; and Farms Drive separated Monroe from Howell Roads on three sides. Only two years later – on October 11, 1842 – another act passed by the Georgia General Assembly authorized development along what are now Cook Avenue (northwest corner of State Route 205), Pryor Avenue (east corner of State Route 205), McClendon Avenue (southwest corner of State Route 205), Park Avenue (northeast corner of State Route 205) within current boundaries of Monroe Township proper; this action created much controversy because it gave control over these blocks to developers rather than citizens who had voted for them! However, this initial expansion did lead to some real progress for Monroeites including construction beginning on November 3rd – just five weeks after passage – of a millrace called Cook Creek which connected Putnam Lake withthe creek running through town center outside original limits! This millrace permitted farmers to grind corn directly into flour without having to go all the way downriver; it also helped increase trade between townspeople and farmers across Fulton Street during early 19th century subsistence levels Thanks largely to this water power initiative developed by local entrepreneurs James Witherspoon [now Mayor], Ebenezer Strong [now Village President], Hiram Gibson [now Trustee] & others!

In 1860–1911 local newspapers reported that more than $1 million had been invested by farmers living along both banks of the river for raising cotton crops; however this investment failed because production tapered off due to increasing competition from nearby plantations that were able to plant larger crops with better yields at lower costs thanks largely to increased mechanization technologies imported overland by railroads during those years.. However starting around 1910 things began change again when new irrigation systems were built along both banks making farming possible once again while also providing needed water supplies necessary for growing crops including fruits and vegetables which are now some Of Our Top exported items!
