Milton, GA is a small town in Troup County, Georgia. It is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Atlanta. The population was 3,873 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Milton was Elisha Goodloe in 1821. The town was named for John Milton, an early settler in the area and a member of the General Assembly from 1785 to 1786. In 1828, Milton became part of Cobb County when that county was formed from parts of Troup and Fulton counties. The community had a post office from 1829 to 1898. In 1902 it passed through three changes of name before becoming Milton again; its original name being Winton until it changed to Milton after Rev. John Fenton moved there in 1902 and established his mission church there. Milton has four churches: First Baptist Church (1829-1830), Methodist Episcopal Church (1890-1902), African American Baptist Church (1963-1996), and Presbyterianism/AnglicanChurch USA (1998-present). The schools in Milton are Baldwin Park High School which opened in 1961 and now serves as a middle school; Greer Middle School which opened in 1966; Deer Park Elementary School which opened in 1971; and Creek Road Elementary School whichopenedin 1984 In addition to these public schools there are also two private schools: Heritage Academy for Girls located across the street from Baldwin Park High School; and Jackson Ridge Academy which is adjacent to Creek Road Elementary School Milton also has two parks: Morningside Park off Interstate 75 south of town and Greenwood Cemetery off I–75 north of town
