Milton, Georgia is located in the southeastern United States. It was founded in 1821 by Captain John Milton and his family. The town became a seaport on the Savannah River. In 1834, Milton was renamed Jacksonville after the former U.S. president of Florida, Andrew Jackson. After Jackson's death in 1835, Milton reverted to its original name of Jacksonville. In 1845, General James Kenedy moved his army from Cairo, Alabama to Fort Moultrie in Augusta County for operations against Mexico during the Mexican-American War.
