Milton, Georgia is an unincorporated community in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,814 as of the 2010 census. Milton is located on the western edge of the city of Atlanta. The name "Milton" is thought to derive from a Cherokee word meaning "place where trees grow." The first settler in what would become Milton was James Cone in 1837. The community took its name from General John Milton who fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. In 1853, a post office called Milton was established at the intersection of Upson and Paulding Streets; it served until 1886. A schoolhouse and barn were built in 1853-54 by subscription and became known as the Milton School House. In 1865, a group of men led by Captain Augustus Thornton established what would be considered the first black town in America – Thornton Station on DeKalb Avenue west of Paulding Street. With only one store and four homes, Thornton Station grew rapidly due to its proximity to white businesses and residents who welcomed Negroes with open arms. By 1870, Thornton had developed into a small town with over 100 residents that included a cotton gin, grocery store, churches (Anglican and Methodist), schools (grades kindergarten through eighth grade), saloon/taverns (Marriott's) and two hotels - One for whites only called 'Dodge & Company', later renamed 'Atlanta Hotel' after General Richard Dodge's visit to Fulton County in 1865;the other for colored people called 'Mayfield Place'. After several failed attempts to get approval from authorities to incorporate as a municipality within Atlanta proper - including petitions filed by local merchants against incorporation - voters in November 1870 passed an ordinance establishing Milton as an unincorporated village with its own government voiding any municipal rights granted by Atlanta authorities whatsoever. In 1875 Rev Wm Hartsfield arrived in Milton with his wife Fannie Barnes Hartsfield fresh off her return trip from Liberia via New Orleans where she had been working improving health care for free under American auspices while also providing education for freedmen across the South before being sent back home when war came between Confederate States of America (CSA)and Union states following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1863 In early December 1875 Rev Hartsfield organized an all black prayer meeting at Patton Missionary Baptist Church which attracted about 100 people including Ministers Dr Jno Morton (a native son of Athens GA),Rev Wm Moody Jr., Mrs Mahalia Jackson among others Reverend Hartsfield then announced plans to build himself a brick church on his property adjacent to Patton Missionary Baptist Church which he named after his friend General John Gattison who had died fighting at Bull Run during World War II . On February 10th 1876 cornerstone was laid by Mayor John Maynard Wright officiating along with femaleagent Mrs Caroline Browner using $5 worth of donated bricks provided by Merchants Andrew Davenport & Ebenezer Cobb The completion date given for this building is variously given as February 12th or October 16th but most likely October 16th since it coincided exactly with Gattison Chapel built less than two miles away on Fairburn Road opposite US 36 north near Decatur Boulevard . This chapel remains today part of Marist University although its construction began much earlier than that mentioned here . It should be noted that according to some sources both buildings were actually built concurrently but erroneously attributed to different builders/daters

By 1870, there were over 50 businesses in Milton including mills, hotels, stores and schools. In 1912, the townspeople voted to incorporate as a city limits community with a population of 10,000 people; however this plan was not accepted by the authorities which saw it as an attempt by the townspeople to gain more power than they could handle alone. In 1916–1917 Milton suffered from an outbreak of yellow fever that killed many citizens and caused extensive damage to infrastructure such as roads and bridges. Despite this setback, Milton regained some popularity after World War II when it attracted artists such as Driscoll Park (a Playland), Coca Cola Refreshments (the world's first bottling plant) and General Motors plants for defense purposes during World War II In 1957–1959 local officials decided that Milton should become an independent township due primarily to financial reasons; however support for incorporation continued strong among local residents until 1975 when voters took control of municipal affairs from their township leaders following a campaign led by then Mayor Charlie Sanders The merger did not go smoothly due largely to disagreements about how much authority each municipality should have over individual businesses Aftermath included attempts at secession by both municipalities but these failed A referendum taken place in 1998 resulted in approval for annexation into Atlanta which happened on November 2
