Milton was founded in 1828 by John Milton, an Englishman who had fled to North America with his family and settled in what is now Fulton County. In 1892, the community was renamed after George Washington Milton, father of Milton's namesake. In 1893, a group of businessmen from nearby Decatur purchased land in what is now Milton for $2 million. They built a series of mills that revolutionized cotton production in the area. The region became known as "The Cotton Belt." In 1915, when World War I began, there were 10 manufacturers in Milton and it produced over 100% of the country's cotton output. The war ended with victory for the Allies and control of markets within North America shifted to Europe. As a result, industry collapsed across much of southern Georgia and many people lost their jobs. However, Milton continued to thrive thanks to its agricultural sector and its close proximity to major centers like Atlanta and Savannah. After World War II ended, much of southern Georgia reverted back to pre-war levels of poverty and despair. Unfortunately for everyone involved, this period also saw one ofthe most significant changes ever to occur in rural south Georgia: technology arrived on the scene courtesy of Boeing Airplanes which founded Athens-based Dowling Aircraft Company (Dowling). With advances in airplane design came increased productivity at manufacturing plants throughout south Georgia; however these companies also brought about difficulties for small towns like those near Decatur that could not keep up with development trends or compete financially with larger industrialists like Boeing and Dowling Airlines. However despite these challenges – as well as economic hardship – many residents voted into existence two new school districts: Newton Valley School District #1 (later renamed Dekalb) which included parts of southwest Fulton County including parts of Milton; while Enterprise School District #2 which encompassed all but a tiny corner around downtown Decatur included everything west Of MLK Boulevard including part of present day Milton proper In 1984 an amendment was added to theGeorgia Constitution allowing school districts outside metropolitan Atlanta - especially those located within Fulton County - full local taxing power without state aid This change led to rapidly expanding education options available hundreds miles west Of MLK Boulevard (outside today's boundaries) including opportunities for students living near major urban areas such as Alpharetta/Marietta/ Duluth/Atlanta etc., while effectively ending apartheid between east Cobb County municipalities (eastern boundary being Leesburg), western Gwinnett County municipalities (west boundary being Roswell), eastern Gwinnett County municipality (east boundary being Peachtree City), Druid Hills Village(northwest border), Stone Mountain Village(southwestern border)and Milford Heights Village(southeast border). As more people moved away from cities towards rural areas during this time period there were corresponding declines bothin real estate values along corridors such as MLK Boulevard between Atlanta &Decatur & Roswell &Peachtree Cityfaxing away large chunksof central cityscape&employment opportunities elsewherewithin commuting zonesbecoming increasingly rarer&maintaining only high-end subdivisionsvegetated by expensive exotic speciesoftreesoutside normal human vision
