Milton, Georgia is home to the oldest gun safe in America. The Safe House Safes and Gun Shelters was built in 1876 by Milton resident John C. Smith as a way to keep his firearms safe. It is one of only a few gun safes still in use in the United States. The first gun safe on record was built by Judge Samuel Johnston in 1814 when he erected a small fortification near what is now Decatur, Georgia. Johnston used two cannons and four barrels of powder to build thesafe and it was the first self-contained fortified gun safe in the United States. In 1843, Newton County residents James Fenton and Isaac Searcy founded Searcy’s Firearms Manufacturing Company with the goal of producing quality firearms at reasonable prices for everyone who needed them. The company became one of the most successful American firearm manufacturers of its day and produced rifles, shotguns, pistols and armor piercing ammunition for both military and civil use. In 1886, Searcy’s Firearms Manufacturing Company merged with Arms & Armoury Incorporated to form what is today known as Sturm Ruger Corporation. The old Milton Safe House Safes & Gun Shelters remains an important part ofgun safety history even though it no longer operates as a business; it is instead used as a museum dedicated to preserving guns and their history within our community.

One such business was a grocery store owned by Jno Fenton which opened its doors on December 16th, 1875. At first it was called the Grosse Pointe Grocery Store but it soon became known as the Milton Grocery Store because of its location near the center of town. The early days at Milton were hard work but also exciting because there wasn’t anything like this existing anywhere else at that time! People not only bought groceries here but also made their own items like butter and cheese from milk products they collected from neighboring farms or purchased from merchants east of Atlanta! In 1902, when a post office was established in Milton it soon became clear that there would be demand for mail service here since everyone within walking distance had their own mailbox! In 1923, when local businessmen formed an organization to build a new courthouse downtown they knew that they needed a place to put all of their materials so they started shopping around for what would be best for their needs! They eventually chose the two story Georgian-style building which stands today as one of downtown’s most iconic landmarks! Since then, Milton has seen some major changes both good and bad! On one hand, it has seen an increase in population due toaffordable housing developments being built nearby; however, on the other hand crime rates have skyrocketed which has led to increased police patrols throughout town!
