In 1802, he married Sarah Goodall and they moved to what is now Auburn, Alabama. They had six children before moving back to Milton in 1828. John Milton died there in 1853 and Sarah Thomson followed him two years later. The purchase increased U.S.-Georgia relations and helped solidify America’s claim to what are today Lumpkin County and parts of Cobb County. Milton quickly became one of the most important cities in southeastern Georgia due to its location at the intersection of two major transportation routes: One ran north-south through central Georgia while another linked Athens with Savannah, Georgia to the south. In 1835, Milton was chartered as a city by Governor George Rogers Clark under which power it enjoyed until 1913 when it became an independent republic within the United States after being annexed by Atlanta during Reconstruction Era (1868-1877). During this time period, Milton experienced growth both politically and economically due to its location and access to resources like timber, water supply, shipping lanes, minerals and cotton plantations – all key ingredients for economic growth in those days.
