Milton, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,023 at the 2010 census. Milton is known for its General Electric plant and its downtown business district, which has a variety of shops and businesses including several Sears stores. The community began as a small log cabin settlement on the east side of the river near present-day Lithonia. In 1810, James Milton built a gristmill on the west side of the river and named it after himself. The mill prospered until 1814 when an investment in new technology caused it to Granger & Drake to bankruptcy. Milton's first school was established in 1825 by three men from nearby Mallow who pooled their money to build and operate a schoolhouse. According to one source, "Milton had been founded by James Milton circa 1800 but no record exists citing him as the founder." In 1830, Samuel Dunham started irrigating land with water taken from the Chattahoochee River south of present-day Lithonia and donated it to Milton for use as part of his donation to Fulton County. The village quickly became associated with irrigation because it enabled farmers in other areas of Fulton County to benefit from production increases brought about by advances in transportation technologies such as railroads and canals. One early entrepreneur was Wm. Ayer who operated a feed store next door to his home until he sold it in 1865 to Jno Pemberton Jr., future mayor of Atlanta (1868–75). Ayer also invested money in two sawmills that were used to make rails used on logging railways across North Carolina during Reconstruction; these mills are still standing today within walking distance of downtown Milton. In 1886 Drury Wilburn opened what is now called Wilburn Drug Store on Federal Street just south of present-day Plaza Drive between Streetslight Boulevard (now I-675) and Park Avenue (now Walton Road). This was one of first drugstores open during Reconstruction Period along with several others around town such as Drury Pharmacy on Taylor Street (now Independence Day Boulevard), Dixie Drug Store at Third Street/Highway 22nd Avenue northwest corner where Highway 82 intersects Interstate 590 ( presently known as US Hwy 278 ), New Hope Drug Store at Second Street/Highway 231st Avenue northwest corner opposite old US Hwy 441 which served rural Atlantans until fall 1998 when they closed due primarily to increased competition from Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc.. In addition local grocery store Grocery Outlet #2 which continued operation until fall 1998 also reopened shortly afterwards following closure by Walgreens parent company Procter & Gamble Co.. A major development related directly or indirectly toGeneral Electric occurred when GE purchased Thomas Edison's former Manufacturing Plant No.#1 located adjacent thereto – this property becameidered GE Power Station #1 later renamed Regional Headquarters Building located adjacent thereto becoming GE Power Station Administration Building being completed circa 1951 while remaining leased back under lease agreement thru same name thru Atchison Topeka Kansas Corp ltd continuing through Analog Devices Corp effective Jan 1 1969 remaindered thereon through Dec 31 1978 having been discontinued operations therein since then…..” It wasn't long before people realized that electric power could be produced using natural gas available closeby like found at Watkins Mill Site near current day Chatsworth Drive South off Old State Rd 401 Also owned by Gordon Hardie hereabouts…. eventually turbines were installed using steam created from chaff burning straw left over from farming operations
