After Athens Female Academy closed down in 1827 due to low enrollment levels, Robertson opened two more schools - Oneida Male Academy and Lamar Male Academy – each of which had ninety students by 1830 when they too closed down due to lack of funding or competition from other academies within their respective townships or counties). Milton residents voted to secede from Georgia on January 1st, 1861 following the American Civil War (the state seceded eight days later). The town's website claims that "the men took their shotguns and rifles into the churches and began firing shots into the air as they proclaimed 'secession.'" However no documentation exists verifying this claim beyond local legend only perpetuated by local residents/storytellers at this time; there have been no further updates since then.
