Milton is a town in southwestern Georgia, United States. The population was 1,384 at the 2010 census. Milton is located on the Chattahoochee River and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Milton was founded in 1820 by Isaac Sharp when he purchased land from the Chickasaw Nation. In 1831, Milton became one of six townships within what would become Fulton County. In 1868, Milton incorporated as a city and remains an independent municipality to this day. The economy of Milton is based primarily on agriculture and manufacturing. The town has two hospitals, one for mental health and one for general care; it also operates a small post office, a summer campground, three public schools (grades pre-k through 12th), two churches (one Baptist and one Methodist), four businesses (three agricultural and one manufacturing), two libraries (one school district library with over 100 titles and one community library with 50 titles), four water systems (four municipal water systems serving all of Fulton County as well as two private water systems serving neighboring municipalities), three parks (including Oneonta Park which opened in 1907) and several thousand acres of forested land managed by the City forestry department. Milton’s history goes back to 1820 when Isaac Sharp established himself along the Chattahoochee River near present-day Milton while working for his brother Ebenezer Sharp. That year, he purchased 144 acres from the Chickasaw Nation, making him the first white person to purchase property in that area since 1794 when Colonel James Dunmore sold 9 square miles including present-day Milton to John Hawkins Sr.. The following year saw another important sale - Isaac Sharp sold 6 square miles adjacent to present day Roswell to David Cobb for $1 per acre! This early success set off a pattern where each new settler bought additional land until they had created what is now downtown Milton – today’s core business district – around 1840! In 1824 or “the golden age” of farming in Georgia as reported by historian W C Griggs Jr., about 750 farmers were operating on 2 million acres across all 11 western Georgia counties! By 1830 there were more than 2200 farmers residing in Fulton County alone – up from 350 residents just 10 years earlier! In those days there was no such thing as urban planning or zoning laws like we have today; only individual landowners could build what they pleased! Consequently many homes were built without any regard for exterior design or functionality; some remain standing today simply because their builder did not bother adding any features subsequent owners might want! The following year saw another important development: A road leading into town was completed!!! This roadway allowed wagon trains carrying goods downriver past Roswell into Marietta then eastward towards Chattanooga before arriving at Kingsport upstream at Fourth Street/Uptown MARTA Station… this served both as transportation access into town center duringmigrant season as well as getting people out of town during normal business hours . It wasn’t until1830 that Coca Cola began bottling here!! This early influence can be seen throughout our culture today with items like Coca Cola products being marketed nationally outside of our borders originally through marketing stunts such as advertising billboards placed high atop mountainsides overlooking our riverside communities!!! Today we still enjoy fresh mountain air right near our doorstep thanks to this 20th century innovation!! As economic times improved between 1830 & 1840 things changed again starting around 1850 when cotton prices plummeted due largely to American slavery being abolished worldwide!!!! However despite low cotton prices local farmers continued expanding their operations using every tool at their disposal including irrigation equipment borrowed from neighboring plantations !! Cotton production expanded statewide resulting in more jobs available but also increased costs associated with inputs needed for growing crops….. so much so that many farmer families lost everything after foreclosure during these difficult times…… however through hard work & determination some continue farming even during tough times…..despite these challenges current residents OF Milton ARE THE BUSINESSOWNERS OF THIS COASTAL CITY FORMER GENTLEMAN ISAAC SHARP WAS ONE OF THESE FARMERS THAT GAVE MILTON ITS START…. HE INVESTED IN PLANTATION ESTABLISHMENTS AND HELPED TO DRIVE OUT CANNONBALL FROM OUR COMMUNITY !! Milton, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 3,764 at the 2010 census. Milton is named after Puritan preacher John Milton and his family settled in the area in 1814. In 1825, Milton became the seat of government for Fulton County. The city of Milton was incorporated on February 14, 1929. In 1870, a group of citizens petitioned the local board of education to allow them to build a school on their property that they had been using as an animal farm. On December 5th, 1870, the village of Milton received its charter from the Georgia General Assembly. Milton experienced some growth during World War II due to its proximity to Naval Air Station Dahlgren and Navy Yard Jacksonville. The war also created jobs for many people in the area such as truck drivers and machinists who built Aircraft Production facilities at Dahlgren and Jacksonville naval yards. After World War II ended, many residents began moving out of Milton because there were no jobs available or because they found other towns with similar characteristics more attractive. Some residents did move into neighboring communities but most retained their homes in Milton throughout the years until it lost its municipal status on May 1st, 2009 when it became part of Gwinnett County
