In 1824, two men from Milton, Georgia, developed a new type of optical instrument called a binocular. They were the first to make this type of device available for public use. In 1881, it was renamed after one of America’s most famous poets – Sir Walter Scott – who donated land for a school and library in honor of his friend and mentor Dr. Hugh Grosvenor (1768-1851). After years of controversy over whether or not to rename the school after Scott because he owned property in neighboring Milledgeville which also had a school named after him (Milton residents voted against renaming), upon its inauguration on September 12th, 1886 it became known as The Milton-Dozier School District. On July 1st of this year (2000), the name change came into effect following agreement between all parties involved in this matter including representatives from both high schools authorities which remains effective today

In 1814, a group of settlers named Clearwater built a cabin on the Big Creek near what is now known as Milton. The first store in Milton opened its doors in 1876. By 1898, there were ten businesses in town and $24,000 in business receipts that year alone. In 1912, Milton became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and four councilors. In 1928, the county seat was moved from Athens to Milton after Athens cut off funding for its municipal services
Milton was founded in 1816 by John Milton, father of the famous author. The town is located in a valley between two mountain ranges and became an important agricultural center during the antebellum period. In 1875, the Milton Mills mill closed and was replaced by a new mill which continued to be used until it burned down in 1915. The town also had a small post office from 1816 until 1865.
