Some of the oldest ammunition in Milton is probably from 1847, when Captain John Cline purchases rounds of shot and shells at a store on Commerce Street. In 1859, Jesse Vickers established a brick manufacturing business on High Street near Auburn Avenue. Ammunition production increased during this time as cannons were replaced by rifle-fired muskets with greater accuracy. The early 20th century saw an increase in gun violence in the area due to Prohibition Era restrictions on alcohol sales which caused many businesses to close their doors or switch from producing ammunition to selling beer or other products prohibited under law. This caused some manufacturers to abandon Ammo production entirely; however, others such as Winchester continued to produce high-quality munitions for civilian use until around World War II when they transitioned into armament manufacturing once again (though now primarily focuses on sporting goods). In 1948, Milton residents voted 3-2 in favor of annexation into Atlanta; as a result, Ammo production moved from downtown Atlanta down I-285 towards Marietta beginning in 1949. However Ammo’s new home did not last long: within 10 years it had been relocated back up I-285 again due to competition from nearbyMarietta Arsenal (now known as Clark County Regional Airport). After numerous moves throughout its history Ammo has settled upon its current location within Milton – currently located off Old Taylor Road east of Interstate 285 – thanks largely to its proximity to industry and highway access (particularly since MARTA provides free parking for all employees). However, due to its rich history and strong economy, Milton has since regained some of its former glory as a vibrant cultural center.
