Milledgeville is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,549 as of the 2010 census. The city is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Milledgeville is one of the most important cities in Cobb County and has been an important cultural and commercial center for over 100 years. Milledgeville was founded by General John A. Milledge on December 15, 1824 as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River between Marietta and Smyrna. In 1827, Milledgeville became a town and was later renamed to honor Rear Admiral David Denny who had saved Athens from capture during the American Revolution. Milledgeville had 1,000 residents by 1830 but it grew rapidly thanks to its strategic location on both rivers and its position as the terminus for the Georgian Turnpike which connected Atlanta with other parts of Georgia and South Carolina. In 1851, Milledgeville became an incorporated city under state law which made it one of first cities in Georgia to have landed property tax exemption from local governments. Milledgeville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Milledgeville is located on the Appomattox River and was founded by General Alfred Milledge in 1819 as part of the new colony of Georgia. Milledgeville developed around a small mill built in 1819 by General Alfred Milledge to process flour from the area's many cornfields. In 1865, what had been a small community became an important railroad town when the Atlanta and Chattanooga Railway moved its headquarters from Knoxville, Tennessee to Milledgeville. The railroad helped create a boomtown that grew rapidly during the late 19th century, with businesses such as banks and hotels dotting the streets. By 1900, however, most of Middledgeville's businesses were either defunct or had closed down due to technological advances or other reasons such as competition from larger towns around Atlanta. The mill closed in 1911 but played a significant role in defining Milledgeville for future generations; it still stands today and is used for storage purposes only. During World War II, Middledgeville was one of several rural communities across Georgia that functioned as air raid shelters during the war effort. After the war ended, many of these shelters were converted into commercial buildings used by local merchants until they were demolished in the early 1950s when authorities decided that they no longer posed any threat to public safety. Today only one shelter remains standing – it has been restored and is open to visitors as part of various tourist attractions within downtown Middledgemeille
