Milledgeville, Georgia is a small town in south central Georgia that has been called the " optical capital of the world." The city was founded in 1887 by two men named James Milledge and George Stephenson. It became a major center for optical industry due to its location on the Chattahoochee River and its access to resources such as quarries and forests. In 1907, Milledgeville became the first city in America to install electric streetlights. In 1931, Milledgeville was renamed Atlanta after General William T. Sherman, who had helped create the city. The population of Milledgeville reached over 50,000 by 1950. Milledgeville is a small town in the northwestern corner of Georgia, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It lies within the Jackson County seat of Winterset. Milledgeville takes its name from General James A. Milligan, who fought in the American Civil War and later became a U.S. Senator from Georgia. The area where Milledgeville now stands was first settled by Creeks and Cherokees in the early 1800s. In 1819, Colonel John C. Smith founded what would become Gainesville on land that he had awarded to Major David Wilcox for his services during the Creek War of 1818-1819). The town was originally called "Winfrey" after Colonel John C. Smith's brother-in-law and fellow settler, Winfrey Randolph (1775-1851). On November 8, 1850, General James A. Milligan joined forces with Majors Archibald Swayne and Elijah Burch to repel an attack by Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell on their post at Gadsden Landing near present day Roswell Village (and just north of Milledgeville), which cost them both their lives and many menfolk among their army's ranks (the battle is today commemorated by a historical marker located at Gadsden Landing State Park)). milligan's victory led to increased settlement around him in what would become Gainesville proper; this includes conversions of Native Americans living along the Chattahoochee River into Methodists and Presbyterians as well as development of mills & stores ranging from agricultural goods such as flour to luxury items like saddles & bridles - all while Fort Gainesville sat idle due to Union blockades). On December 3rd, 1870 – less than two years after Plantation Life began – citizens voted unanimously to adopt a new government headed by George Washington Harris (a Special Agent for Indian Affairs appointed by President Ulysses S Grant) effective January 1st following passage of an act incorporating “Gainesville Township” with a population of only fifty people including six Indians residing therein...In 1877/78 Mr Jno Hoggall erected for $5 per acre… one mile wide & one mile deep earthenware waremarket….also known as “The Gabby House” [now known as Gaylord’s Store]

Milledgeville is located in Clarke County, Georgia and has been inhabited by the Milledgeville tribe of Cherokee for over three hundred years. The town was first platted in 1825 and became a center of commerce during the antebellum period. In 1838, General Andrew Jackson signed the Act of Union which merged the states of Georgia and Tennessee into the United States. The town grew rapidly during this time and by 1840 had reached its peak population with over 4,000 residents. However, due to cotton manufacturingcapacity becoming available in nearby Chattanooga, Milledgeville experienced a decline in population until after World War II when it again experienced significant growth. Today, Milledgeville is an agricultural community that retains its cultural significance as one of the few places in America where Cherokee people still live. It also remains a popular tourist destination due to its scenery and historical attractions.
The area now known as Milledgeville was first settled by the Aritsen family in 1786. The town was chartered on February 27, 1821. It is named after General James Milledge, who explored and surveyed the area for the Georgia Railroad company. The town grew quickly and by 1851 it had a population of over 100 people. By 1865, Milledgeville had become a religious center with churches being built in both the older and new town boundaries. On July 6, 1881, Milledgeville became a municipality under the jurisdiction of Decatur County. In 1907, services were held at First Baptist Church to celebrate its centennial. In 1951, Milledgeville was annexed to Fulton County and today it has a population of just over 10 people
