Milledgeville is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,399 at the 2000 census and 31,853 at the 2010 census. Milledgeville is the county seat of Fulton County. It is also home to Dooley University. Milledgeville was founded in 1819 as a small farming community on the Chattahoochee River by James Merrill and others who came from Norfolk, Virginia. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period because of its strategic location on two main routes linking Atlanta with Savannah and Mobile, Alabama. In 1858–59, Milledgeville became the capital of Georgia when General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Jackson's original home in Athens to Milledgeville. During Reconstruction (1868-20), Milledgeville played an important role in efforts to reunite former slaves with their families and secure voting rights for them; it also welcomed many white businessmen and professionals who invested in new businesses or relocated to Fulton County during this time. After Reconstruction ended in 1920, MilledgeVILLE experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Atlanta until World War II led to heavy military installations there and a sharp decrease in population when those bases were closed down or converted into other uses (e.g., air Force Base Cobb). In recent decades however, Milledgeville has begun to experience increased development due to its location near Interstate 85/I-285 and its easy access to both job training programs and cultural attractions such as Dooley University

Milledgeville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1811 and named for Major General James Milledge (1783-1862), a brigadier general in the United States Army during the War of 1812. The first post office in Milledgeville was established on December 12, 1811, and its first settler was John Bailey. In 1831, J. C. Payne built the first store in Milledgeville and it remained an important commercial center until 1865 when railroads arrived and commerce shifted to Atlanta. A cotton gin was built here in 1865 by Wm Ladd & Co. The cotton gin helped spur economic development which led to the growth of Milledgeville into one of the leading small towns in rural Fulton County. The town's namesake General James Milledge played a significant role during the War of 1812 as a brigadier general with distinction campaigns against British forces near Albany and Fayetteville on both sides of the Chattahoochee River Valley. On November 17, 1813 he won a major victory over numerically superior British forces at Battle Creek Bridge near present-day Roswell after successfully attacking from several directions simultaneously utilizing his cavalry unit under Colonel Abraham Baldwin). After that battle he became known as "theHeroOfCriminalTrial" for successfully prosecuting five men accused of treason against their government - three Americans and two natives of Canada - resulting in their convictions and transportation to prison for life without parole where they died within months due to disease contracted while incarcerated at Kingston Penitentiary outside Toronto (now known as Star Rock Museum). He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery along with his wife Anna Maria Baldwin (1790–1866) who also served as a brigadier general during the war; together they are considered one of only two families ever honored with such an honor by Ulysses S Grant when he awarded them posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1888 Milledgeville has had many pioneers come through its doors including: Drayton McLaws (1810 – 1886), Alexander Fleming (1901-1945), George Washington Carver (1895 – 1947), Forrestal Wallace Woodson (1902-1973), Earnest Hemingway (1920-2018) Additionally, many famous American politicians have been born or raised here including: Clayborne Carson Sr., Jimmy Carter Sr., Grover Cleveland Jr., Franklin D Roosevelt Jr., Barry GoldwaterJr., Ronald Reagan
